Were You Raised to Believe Money Is Scarce?

Before we start: I’m not a therapist, and nothing here is therapy or professional advice. This is my own personal experience — what I’ve noticed, unpacked, and am still actively unlearning. Mindset work isn’t a one-time fix for me; it’s an ongoing journey, and I’m

Types of Savings Accounts, Explained Simply

Types of Savings Accounts, Explained Simply

Not all savings accounts work the same way, and picking the wrong type for your goal can mean missing out on interest or flexibility. Here’s how I understand the main types available in the UK, based on my own research and experience — not a

Your Breathing Fund

Your Breathing Fund

Most people call this an “emergency fund.” I’ve never loved that name — it sounds clinical, and it frames saving as something you do purely out of fear. I started calling mine a breathing fund instead: money that exists so I can breathe when life throws something unexpected at me, instead of panicking.

I’m not a financial advisor. This is just how I personally think about and approach this, not advice about how much you specifically should save.

What It Actually Is

Money set aside, separate from your everyday spending, specifically for unexpected costs — a boiler breaking, an unplanned bill, a change in circumstances. Not for holidays, not for treats — just for the moments life doesn’t ask permission.

Why It Matters More Than It Sounds

A breathing fund isn’t just practical, it’s emotional. Knowing it’s there changes how you experience uncertainty. Instead of a sudden cost sending you into panic or straight onto a credit card, you have options — which is exactly what this whole site is built around.

How I Personally Think About Building One

There’s no single “correct” amount — it depends entirely on your own circumstances, and I’d genuinely encourage you to think about what feels right for you rather than chasing a specific number you’ve seen quoted elsewhere. A few things that have helped me:

  • Starting with a small, achievable first goal (even £100–£200 changed how a bad week felt for me)
  • Building gradually through consistent small amounts, rather than waiting until I could save a large lump sum
  • Keeping it in an account separate from my everyday spending, so I’m not tempted to dip into it
  • Treating using it as genuinely needing it — not “as long as I pay it back this month”

Getting Started

If this feels overwhelming, start absurdly small — even £5 a week adds up, and momentum matters more than the amount at the beginning. Pair this with one of the budgeting techniques from the Budgeting page, and consider automating a small transfer so it happens without relying on willpower each month.

Your breathing fund doesn’t need to be perfect or huge to matter. It just needs to exist.

Budgeting Techniques: Finding What Actually Works for You

Budgeting Techniques: Finding What Actually Works for You

There’s no single “right” way to budget — what works brilliantly for one person can feel completely wrong for another. Here are a few well-known approaches I’ve come across (and tried myself, in various seasons of life), explained simply, so you can see which one

Making Money with AI: A Realistic Overview

Making Money with AI: A Realistic Overview

AI income is one of the most talked-about ways to earn online right now — and also one of the most oversold. A lot of what’s out there is vague hype (“make £10k a month with AI!”) with no real substance behind it. I’ve spent

How to Start a Blog (The Way I Actually Did It)

How to Start a Blog (The Way I Actually Did It)

Starting a blog sounds intimidating, but the actual technical setup takes less time than people think — the hard part is showing up consistently afterward, not the setup itself. Here’s exactly how I got Mum’s Financial Freedom up and running.

This page contains a referral link — if you sign up through it, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I’m not a financial advisor; this is just what worked for me.

1. Pick your niche and name

Before anything technical, decide what you want to write about and pick a name that gives you room to grow (rather than boxing you into one narrow topic forever).

2. Get hosting and a domain

This is the one step that actually costs money, but it’s genuinely inexpensive to start. I use Hostinger for hosting — [sign up here (referral link)] — because it’s affordable, beginner-friendly, and includes everything you need to get a WordPress site live quickly, including a free domain on most plans.

  • Choose a hosting plan
  • Register your domain name (yoursite.com)
  • Most hosting providers, including Hostinger, will install WordPress for you automatically as part of setup

3. Choose a theme

WordPress themes control how your site looks. Pick something clean and simple to start — you can always change it later. I’d recommend starting with a free theme rather than paying for one until you know what style you actually want.

4. Set up your key pages

Before you even publish your first post, get these basics in place:

  • Homepage
  • About page
  • Contact page (if you want one)
  • A privacy policy (required if you’re collecting emails or using analytics/ads)

5. Write your first few posts

Don’t wait for the “perfect” first post. Write something genuinely useful, hit publish, and improve as you go — your first posts won’t be your best, and that’s completely normal.

6. Set up analytics

Install Google Analytics (or a similar tool) early, so you can start seeing what’s actually working from day one rather than guessing later.

The honest truth: the technical setup is the easy part — you can have a live WordPress site within an hour. What actually takes time is writing consistently and being patient while it grows. Don’t let the setup step become a reason to delay starting.

Achieving this state involves a streamlined approach to managing personal finances, which can be particularly effective when one adopts a minimalist lifestyle.

The Benefits of Minimalism in Finance

Embracing minimalism can lead to significant benefits in financial management.
