Side Hustles for Busy Mums: Low, Medium & Higher Earning Ideas

If you’re reading this because you’re tired, stretched thin, and just want a bit of breathing room financially, I get it. I’ve been side-hustling since I was a kid, from car boot sales to surveys to affiliate marketing, and I know firsthand that not every side hustle fits every season of life.

Some days you’ve got twenty minutes while the kids nap. Other days you’ve got a proper afternoon to yourself. That’s why I’ve broken these down by how much time and effort they realistically take — and roughly what you can expect to earn — so you can pick what actually fits your life right now, not someone else’s.

A quick note: I’m not a financial advisor, and this isn’t financial advice — just what’s worked for me and other mums. Some links on this page may be affiliate links, meaning I could earn a small commission if you use them, at no extra cost to you.

Low-Effort, Low-Time Side Hustles

Perfect for nap times, waiting rooms, or the 20 minutes after the kids go to bed.

  • Paid surveys — not going to make you rich, but genuinely easy money for spare minutes
  • Cashback apps — money you’re already spending, just coming back to you
  • Selling unused items — car boot sales, Facebook Marketplace, Vinted — clearing clutter and making cash
  • Referral schemes — sharing links for services you already use

Realistic earning: a little extra pocket money each month, low but steady

Medium-Effort Side Hustles

For when you’ve got a few hours a week and want something with more upside.

  • Freelancing your existing skills — writing, admin, design, whatever you already know how to do
  • Reselling — buying low, selling higher, whether that’s clothes, books, or niche items
  • Virtual assistant work — flexible hours, works around school runs
  • Content creation on a platform you enjoy

Realistic earning: a genuinely useful supplement to household income

Higher-Effort, Higher-Ceiling Side Hustles

These take more time upfront, but have real potential to grow into something bigger — even a full income replacement over time.

  • Starting a blog (more on this below)
  • Print-on-demand / online shops
  • Building a service-based business around a skill you already have
  • AI-powered income streams (I’ll be covering this in more depth soon — it’s where my background comes in)

Realistic earning: wide range, but this is where long-term, scalable income lives

Where to start: if you’re brand new to side hustling, start in the low-effort tier. Get a small win, build confidence, then move up as your time and energy allow. You don’t have to do all of these — pick one, actually finish it, then decide if you want more.

Money = options. One small hustle today can be the first step toward a very different story.
